Macro photography becomes much easier when you stop searching for one “perfect” setting and instead build a repeatable workflow. Magnification, subject movement, wind, working distance and available light can change from one photograph to the next. The camera settings and focusing method need to change with them.
I use the OM System OM-1 Mark I with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens. Depending on the subject, I can add extension tubes or a Raynox DCR-250, and I use a Godox TT600 with diffusion when natural light is insufficient. The advice below is based on that real equipment and on the practical problems that appear when photographing insects, flowers and other small subjects.
Quick starting point: begin at 1:1 or lower magnification, keep the camera steady, place the important detail parallel to the sensor when possible, and prioritise good light before adding more magnification.
1. Choose Magnification Before Camera Settings
Magnification changes almost everything. At higher magnification, depth of field becomes thinner, camera movement looks greater, working distance may decrease and more light is usually required. If you begin at maximum magnification, several difficulties arrive at the same time.
Start far enough back to find and frame the subject comfortably. Move closer only when the composition and focus are under control. A photograph that shows the subject within its environment can be stronger than a frame filled with detail but lacking context.
A dedicated macro lens is the most convenient starting point because it can focus from normal distances down to its maximum reproduction ratio. Extension tubes reduce the minimum focusing distance, while a close-up attachment such as the Raynox DCR-250 increases magnification without placing additional glass between the camera and the main lens mount.

2. Pick a Lens for the Subject, Not Only the Magnification Ratio
A true macro lens capable of 1:1 reproduction is useful, but focal length determines the working distance and field of view. A shorter macro lens can be excellent for flowers, products and indoor subjects. A longer lens gives more room between the front element and a nervous insect, although the entire setup becomes larger and heavier.
The Micro Four Thirds M.Zuiko 60mm gives an angle of view similar to a 120mm lens on full frame, while remaining compact. That balance is one reason it works well with the OM-1 for handheld field macro.
There is no rule that every photographer needs a 90–105mm full-frame macro lens. Sensor format, subject, budget, lighting and desired working distance matter more than a number printed on the lens.
3. Use Aperture as a Compromise
At macro distances, depth of field can remain extremely thin even at a small aperture. However, closing the aperture indefinitely is not a complete solution. Diffraction gradually softens fine detail, and the reduced light may require more flash power or a higher ISO.
An aperture around f/5.6 to f/11 is often a practical starting range on Micro Four Thirds, but it is not a fixed rule. Use the wider end when you want subject isolation or when light is limited. Close down when more of the subject must appear sharp and the loss from diffraction is acceptable.
There is no requirement to use f/16 for every insect. The correct aperture depends on magnification, sensor format, how the subject is positioned and whether you plan to create a focus stack.

4. Control Shutter Speed and Flash Separately
Without flash, shutter speed must be fast enough to reduce both camera movement and subject movement. A stationary flower indoors allows a slower exposure than an insect moving on a leaf in the wind.
With flash, the short flash duration can become the main action-stopping element. Shutter speed still controls the amount of ambient light that appears in the frame. A faster value darkens the background; a slower value allows more ambient light and can create a more natural balance, provided movement does not become visible.
Do not automatically choose 1/250 second without checking the camera’s normal flash-sync limit and the behaviour of the trigger. High-speed sync can be useful, but it reduces effective flash power.
5. Add Flash When It Solves a Real Problem
Flash is valuable when a smaller aperture, a lower ISO or motion freezing is needed. It is particularly useful at high magnification, where very little natural light reaches the sensor. Nevertheless, it is not compulsory for every macro image. Flowers, textures and motionless indoor subjects can be photographed using window light, continuous light or a tripod.

6. Treat the Diffuser as Part of the Lighting System
A bare flash is physically small relative to the subject and often creates hard shadows and sharp white reflections. A diffuser increases the apparent size of the light source and brings it closer to the subject. This normally produces smoother highlights, softer shadow edges and more natural colour.
The distance between the diffuser and subject matters as much as the diffuser material. A large panel far away can behave like a small source. A modest diffuser positioned close to the subject can appear much larger and softer.

When testing a diffuser, examine the brightest reflective areas at full size. A concentrated white hotspot indicates that the apparent source is still too small or uneven. Adjust its position before simply reducing exposure.
7. Choose Autofocus or Manual Focus for the Situation
Autofocus does not need to be abandoned in macro photography. Modern cameras can focus quickly and accurately, especially at moderate magnification and on subjects with clear contrast. The OM-1 also offers subject-detection and burst capabilities that can be useful when an insect is moving.
Manual focus becomes helpful at higher magnification or when autofocus repeatedly selects the wrong detail. One effective technique is to set the desired magnification and move the camera gently forwards and backwards until the critical detail enters the focus plane.
Use whichever method produces the photograph reliably:
- Autofocus: useful for moving subjects, moderate magnification and rapidly changing distance.
- Manual focus: useful for precise placement, predictable magnification and subjects that confuse autofocus.
- Focus bracketing or stacking: useful when one frame cannot provide sufficient depth of field and the subject remains still enough.
8. Use Focus Stacking When the Subject Allows It
Focus stacking combines frames focused at slightly different distances. It can reveal far more detail than closing the aperture alone, without relying on an extremely small aperture. The OM-1 can automate focus bracketing and, in supported modes, produce an in-camera stack.
The technique works best when the camera, subject and lighting stay consistent throughout the sequence. Wind, moving legs, antennae or changing reflections can create alignment problems and stacking artefacts. For a live moving insect, a single well-timed frame may be the better choice.

If flash is used for a stack, keep the power low enough to recycle consistently between frames. Moving the diffused flash closer often allows lower power without losing illumination.
9. Do Not Dismiss the Tripod
A tripod can be impractical when following an active insect through vegetation, but it is far from useless in macro photography. It is extremely valuable for products, gemstones, plants indoors, focus stacks and any subject that remains still.
For field work, a monopod, small support, beanbag or simply bracing the camera against a stable object can provide a useful compromise. Image stabilisation helps, but good physical support still improves consistency.

10. Align the Focus Plane with Important Details
Because depth of field is thin, subject angle strongly affects what appears sharp. If a butterfly’s wings, a beetle’s back or a row of small details lie approximately parallel to the camera sensor, more of them can fall within the same focus plane.
This does not mean every macro photograph should be flat. A diagonal angle can create depth and lead the viewer into the image. The important decision is which feature must be sharp: usually the nearest eye for an animal, the key texture for a product or the most distinctive structure of a flower.
11. Pay Attention to the Background
A technically sharp subject can still be weakened by a distracting background. Before pressing the shutter, move slightly left, right, higher or lower and watch how the background changes. A few centimetres can remove a bright stem, introduce a cleaner colour or increase the distance between subject and background.
When flash creates a black background, you have several options: slow the shutter within practical limits, raise ISO, open the aperture, reposition the subject relative to the background or add controlled light behind it.
12. Photograph Insects at the Right Time
Temperature and weather influence insect behaviour. Warm conditions generally produce more activity, while cooler early mornings may provide opportunities to photograph resting insects. Wind can be more disruptive than temperature because it continuously moves both the subject and the focus plane.
Avoid damaging plants or disturbing an insect simply to obtain a cleaner composition. Move slowly, do not block its escape route and leave the location as you found it.
13. Check Sharpness in the Field
Reviewing only the full image on the rear screen can hide slight focus errors. Magnify the important area and check the eye, texture or edge that must be sharp. Also inspect the highlights for clipping and the background for unexpected bright areas.
Take short variations rather than dozens of identical frames. Change one useful element—focus point, angle, diffuser position or background—and compare the results later.
A Practical OM-1 Starting Workflow
- Begin at moderate magnification and frame the subject.
- Choose autofocus or manual focus according to movement.
- Select an aperture appropriate to the desired depth of field.
- Set shutter speed for ambient balance and movement.
- Choose the lowest practical ISO rather than forcing the minimum value.
- Add diffused flash only when it improves exposure or motion control.
- Check the critical detail at high magnification.
- Use focus bracketing only when the subject is stable enough.

Final Thoughts
The strongest macro photographs do not come from one aperture, one focusing method or maximum magnification. They come from recognising the main problem in front of you and selecting the simplest technique that solves it.
Start with good light, a manageable reproduction ratio and a clear idea of what must be sharp. Once those elements are controlled, the OM-1, 60mm macro lens, extension tubes, Raynox attachment and flash become creative choices rather than complications.
