Godox TT600 Review: Real-World Use with Olympus OM-1

Updated and reviewed by Marian Florinel Condruz. I own the Godox TT600 and use it with my OM System OM-1 Mark I, particularly for macro photography. The photographs of the flash and the macro examples in this review come from my own equipment and real use.

The TT600 is an affordable, powerful manual speedlight with a built-in Godox 2.4GHz X radio system. Its main limitation is equally important: it does not provide TTL automatic flash exposure. I set the flash power manually, which suits controlled macro work but requires more understanding than a fully automatic TTL flash.

Godox TT600 review: quick verdict

The Godox TT600 offers a great deal for its price: strong output, manual control from full power down to 1/128, Multi mode, S1 and S2 optical slave modes, a rotating and tilting head, and integration with the Godox X wireless system. For photographers comfortable with manual flash, it remains a capable budget option.

It is not the best choice for someone who needs automatic TTL exposure while moving quickly between subjects and lighting conditions. For my macro setup, however, manual output is not a serious disadvantage because I normally control the subject distance, aperture, ISO and light position.

What is the Godox TT600?

The TT600 is a shoe-mounted manual flash powered by four AA batteries. It can fire directly from a compatible camera’s centre hot-shoe contact, work as an optical slave or operate off-camera through the Godox X radio system when paired with a compatible transmitter.

The standard TT600 should not be confused with a TTL flash. It cannot automatically calculate flash exposure through the camera. The photographer chooses the power level, and the result is adjusted through flash power, distance, aperture and ISO.

My real-world use with the OM System OM-1

I use the TT600 with my original OM System OM-1 Mark I and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm F2.8 Macro lens. At high magnification, available light is often insufficient for the shutter speed and aperture I want. A flash helps freeze small movements, keep ISO under control and illuminate subjects that would otherwise be lost in shadow.

Because the TT600 is manual, I determine the output myself and refine it after checking the result. That is slower than TTL for unpredictable event photography, but it is consistent once the camera, flash and subject distances remain similar.

Design and controls

The TT600 has a conventional rectangular speedlight design and a plastic body. Its rear LCD shows the selected mode, power, zoom and wireless settings. The buttons are functional rather than luxurious, but they provide direct access to the controls needed for manual work.

The flash head tilts from slightly downward to 90 degrees upward and rotates through 360 degrees. This is useful for direct lighting, bouncing from walls or ceilings, and positioning the head toward a diffuser when the flash is used off-camera.

The integrated wide panel can broaden the light coverage, while the small bounce card can add a catchlight when the head is tilted. For close-up photography, I still prefer a larger diffuser because a bare flash positioned close to an insect or reflective surface can produce harsh highlights.

Manual flash power and zoom

Flash output is adjustable from 1/1 to 1/128 power in one-third-stop increments. Full power is useful when the flash is bounced or placed farther from the subject, while lower settings recycle faster and are usually more suitable for close macro work.

The zoom head covers positions from 24mm to 200mm, with wider coverage available through the integrated wide panel. On the TT600, zoom is set manually rather than communicated automatically by the camera lens.

Manual, Multi, S1 and S2 modes

In standard Manual mode, the TT600 emits the power level selected by the photographer. Multi mode produces a rapid sequence of flashes during one exposure and can be used for creative motion studies.

S1 and S2 allow the unit to respond optically to another flash. S1 fires when it detects the first flash. S2 is intended for a setup where the controlling flash produces a TTL pre-flash, so the TT600 ignores the initial pulse and fires with the main exposure.

The built-in Godox X receiver is one of the TT600’s strongest features. With a compatible Godox X transmitter for the camera, the flash can be positioned away from the hot shoe and its manual power can be controlled remotely.

This is useful for macro, portrait and product photography because the direction and distance of the light can be changed independently of the camera. Radio control also avoids the direct line-of-sight requirement of optical triggering.

Trigger compatibility should always be checked for the exact camera system. A Godox transmitter designed for Olympus and Panasonic is the logical choice for my OM-1 when camera-specific communication is required.

High-Speed Sync: an important limitation

The TT600 supports High-Speed Sync when it is used off-camera through a compatible Godox wireless trigger and the camera system supports the required communication. This allows shutter speeds above the camera’s normal flash-sync limit, potentially up to 1/8000 second depending on the camera and trigger.

However, mounting the standard TT600 directly on the camera does not give it TTL communication or normal camera-controlled HSS. This distinction is important: the flash is inexpensive partly because its on-camera operation is fundamentally manual.

Real battery performance and recycling speed depend on the batteries, flash power, temperature and shooting pattern. Lower output levels recycle much faster than repeated full-power flashes.

  • The interface and construction feel functional rather than premium
  • A compatible Godox transmitter is required to obtain the greatest benefit from the X wireless system

Who should buy the Godox TT600?

The TT600 makes the most sense for photographers who understand manual exposure or are willing to learn it. It is well suited to controlled portraits, products, still life and macro work, especially when used off-camera with the Godox X system.

It is less suitable for event photographers who depend on rapid TTL adjustments while moving continuously between different distances and lighting conditions. In that situation, a camera-specific Godox TTL model may be worth the additional cost.

Final verdict after using the Godox TT600

The Godox TT600 is not an expensive TTL speedlight disguised as a bargain. It is a straightforward manual flash with strong output and an unusually useful radio system for its price. Judged on those terms, it offers excellent value.

For my OM-1 macro photography, I can set the power deliberately, soften the light and reproduce the same result across a focus stack. The photographs in this article are more meaningful than a list of specifications: they show that this inexpensive flash can be a genuinely useful part of a real macro system.

  1. You are wrong when you say, “Though the battery life is good, there is a little con associated with it. The batteries used in TT600 are not removable, so it can only be charged using the cable (comes with the package). This prevents the user from keeping an extra set of batteries on hand if there is no charging port available.” The TT600 takes normal “AA” batteries, alkaline or NiMH rechargeable, so you CAN take extra batteries with you.

      I have to stop researching more than one product at a time. It seems I got confused …

  2. Hi Condruzmf, You say above: “As is the case of compatibility with the camera, if the user has to upgrade their camera, it would be essential to use the same brand as before.” Since this a manual flash, it has only one pin on the bottom it will work on any almost camera with a hot shoe.
