Walimex WT-3570 Review: A Tall 3-Way Tripod for Light Kits

Walimex WT-3570 product overview

The Walimex WT-3570 is a basic aluminium tripod with a 3D pan head, a crank-operated centre column and a taller 168 cm maximum height. It is designed for light to medium camera kits rather than heavy professional lenses. At around 1.5 kg with the head fitted and with a quoted 4 kg load limit, it is a practical choice when you want more height than a compact travel tripod but still need an affordable, portable support.

The useful distinction is between holding weight and holding still. A mirrorless camera or entry-level DSLR with a standard zoom is within the WT-3570’s comfort zone. A heavy body and long telephoto lens may be under the stated limit yet still cause head creep or vibration, particularly with the column raised.

A 3D head for deliberate framing

The fixed three-way pan head controls pan, tilt and portrait orientation on separate axes. That makes it slower than a ball head when moving between compositions, but it is easier to level a horizon or make small corrections without the camera flopping to one side. It is a sensible layout for landscapes, family photographs, product work and simple video from a fixed position. It is not a fluid video head, so it will not provide the resistance needed for smooth moving shots.

The large quick-release plate is convenient, provided it is fully seated and locked. Always test the lock before removing your hand. If a lens has a tripod collar, attach the plate to the collar rather than the camera body. This puts the long lens closer to its balance point and reduces strain on the camera mount.

Height and the centre column

The headline 168 cm height is useful for ordinary standing compositions, but it is achieved with the centre column. A raised column lifts the camera above the strongest part of the tripod and makes the setup less rigid. The crank is convenient for a small framing adjustment; it should not be treated as the default way to gain maximum height for a long exposure.

For sharper results at slow shutter speeds, raise the legs first and keep the column as low as the scene allows. The tripod’s 63 cm minimum working height means it is not a true low-level tool, despite the broad adjustment range. For low-angle or close-up work, a separate mini tripod such as the Sirui AM-223 is more practical.

Stability and setup habits

The 29 mm upper leg section, mid-level spreader and rubber feet give the WT-3570 a more substantial stance than a very small travel tripod. Start with the thicker leg sections, make sure the clamps close fully and check that each foot has equal contact with the ground. On uneven terrain, prioritise a level camera over pushing the tripod to its maximum height.

The centre hook can take a small bag for ballast, but only if the bag is not swinging. In wind, a moving bag can do more harm than good. Use the two-second timer or a remote release to avoid pressing the shutter while the camera is settling. GottaPics’ shutter-speed guide covers the practical effect of this movement.

Who should consider it?

The WT-3570 makes sense for a beginner or occasional photographer with a light mirrorless kit, standard zoom or compact DSLR. Its 168 cm height, built-in levels and 3D head give it a clear purpose: stable framing without spending much. It is less attractive for a photographer who needs light hand-luggage packing, fast ball-head handling, wind resistance or serious telephoto support.

Walimex’s current product information lists the same basic format: aluminium construction, 63–168 cm working height, roughly 1.495 kg weight and a 4 kg stated capacity. For a smaller, lighter alternative, see the Walimex WT-3530.

Care and everyday use

The crank column is convenient, but keep its lock secure before mounting a camera. After working on wet or sandy ground, clean the rubber feet and clamp areas rather than forcing a gritty mechanism. The carry bag protects the tripod during transport, but do not rely on it to protect a camera left on the quick-release plate. Remove the camera before carrying the tripod between locations.

These basic routines do more for safe use than raising the column for a few extra centimetres.

30-second decision

The Walimex WT-3570 is a useful low-cost tripod for light and medium-weight camera kits when its tall working height and controlled 3D head matter more than compact packing. Keep the centre column low for demanding photos. Avoid it for big telephoto lenses, wind and smooth video work.
