Zomei Z669C Review: A Small Carbon Travel Tripod With Real Limits

Zomei Z669c product view

The Zomei Z669C is a compact carbon-fibre travel tripod with a ball head and a monopod conversion. It is aimed at photographers who want lighter luggage without dropping all the way down to a tabletop support. The useful distinction is between carrying capacity and working stability: it may be rated around 13 kg, but the small folded size, five leg sections and light ball head mean that a compact mirrorless kit is a much more natural fit than a heavy DSLR with a large telephoto lens.

The Z669C still appears in Zomei’s official tripod range, though package contents and exact figures can vary by seller.

Carbon travel tripod: what the size means

Carbon fibre keeps the Z669C at around 1.5 kg while helping it fold to roughly 38 cm. That is the real attraction. It is much easier to take on a walk or pack in a suitcase than a tall aluminium tripod. Carbon also feels less cold to hold in winter. Neither benefit makes it automatically rigid when fully extended: every additional leg section is narrower, and a raised centre column shifts the camera higher above the strongest part of the support.

For landscapes and city travel, set the thickest leg sections first and extend the narrowest ones only as far as needed. This gives a wider, more stable base. It also leaves more room to avoid using the centre column, which is especially important for long exposures or wind.

Ball head and real camera balance

The supplied ball head is quick to position. It works well for a compact camera, standard zoom or short portrait lens because one knob can release and lock the composition. A ball head is not a fluid video head, so it should not be chosen for smooth moving shots.

Balance matters more than a headline weight rating. A long lens places its mass away from the centre of the ball, allowing the camera to sag if the lock is not fully tightened. Where a lens has a tripod collar, attach the quick-release plate to that collar. The lens and camera then sit closer to their balance point, and the camera mount is not carrying the lens weight. Test the plate and lock before you let go.

Height and stability in use

The maximum height is often listed near 152 cm. This is generous for a compact travel tripod, but it is not a free stability setting. At its tallest, the tripod uses the thinnest lower legs and usually the centre column. A mirrorless body with a standard lens can still work well for a static scene, but a heavy camera, long focal length or breeze will make the limitations apparent.

Use the camera’s two-second timer or remote release for slow shutter speeds. Let the camera settle after focusing, keep the column short, and do not hang a bag from the centre hook if it can swing. A small bag resting against the ground can help in still conditions; a swinging bag creates a pendulum. For context, see GottaPics’ guide to camera shutter speed.

Monopod conversion and low-angle photographs

One leg can combine with the centre column to form a monopod. It is useful when the subject is moving or a full tripod is impractical: it takes some weight out of your arms and reduces vertical movement, but it is not hands-free. A monopod cannot replace a tripod for a timed night exposure.

The legs can be spread for a low camera position, and the reversible column makes occasional ground-level work possible. It is less comfortable than a dedicated mini tripod because the camera hangs between the legs. For regular macro or low-angle photography, the Sirui AM-223 mini tripod is the more direct tool. The Zomei Z888C offers a related carbon-travel idea with more reach.

Who should buy it?

The Z669C is for a photographer who will genuinely carry a tripod because it is compact and light. It makes sense for travel landscapes, family photographs, self-timer shots and a light mirrorless kit. The twist locks keep the folded body clean but take a little longer than flip locks; opening several together makes setup quicker.

Choose a heavier support if your normal work involves a 70–200 mm lens, windy viewpoints, wildlife lenses or frequent video. Larger-diameter legs and a heavier head are less pleasant to carry but deliver the stiffness that those situations require.

30-second decision

The Zomei Z669C is a sensible carbon travel tripod when portability is the first priority and the camera kit is light. It gives useful height, a flexible ball head and monopod conversion without much luggage penalty. Treat the load rating cautiously: for demanding long-lens or windy work, a larger tripod is the better choice.
