The Canon EOS 4000D, sold as the EOS Rebel T100 in some markets, is one of Canon’s most basic entry-level DSLRs. It combines an 18MP APS-C sensor, interchangeable EF/EF-S lenses, an optical viewfinder and full manual exposure controls in a deliberately inexpensive body.

Quick verdict: the EOS 4000D can still teach the fundamentals of photography and produce attractive images in 2026, particularly when paired with a suitable lens. Its slow autofocus in Live View, small low-resolution screen, 3fps burst and basic Full HD video make it feel dated. It is worth considering only when the used or refurbished price is genuinely low.

Who is the EOS 4000D for?

The 4000D was designed for first-time DSLR buyers who wanted manual controls and interchangeable lenses at the lowest possible price. It can be a useful learning camera for exposure, depth of field, focusing and lens choice, especially for someone moving from a phone.

It is less suitable for sports, serious video, fast-moving children or anyone expecting phone-like touchscreen operation. Beginners should also compare it with the better-equipped Canon EOS 2000D and with affordable used mirrorless cameras before deciding.

Design and build quality

The EOS 4000D weighs approximately 436g with its LP-E10 battery and a memory card. Its dimensions are about 129 × 102 × 77mm, making it light for a DSLR while still providing a conventional grip and familiar Canon control layout.

Cost reductions are obvious. The body feels light and plasticky, button labels are printed on the body rather than on individual keys, and the power position is incorporated into the main mode dial. The lens mount is also made from plastic rather than metal. It works with compatible EF and EF-S lenses, but frequent rough lens changes are not what this body was designed for.

The built-in flash must be raised manually. This gives the photographer control over when it fires, but users expecting automatic pop-up operation may initially overlook it.

Screen and optical viewfinder

The fixed 2.7-inch LCD has a resolution of only about 230,000 dots. It is adequate for menus and checking composition, but it looks coarse beside modern displays and can be difficult to judge in bright sunlight.

The screen is not touch-sensitive. The old article incorrectly referred to a touch sensor, but all navigation and focusing controls are operated with physical buttons.

The optical viewfinder provides approximately 95% frame coverage. A small area outside the visible viewfinder frame can therefore appear in the final photograph, so check the edges during playback when precise composition matters.

18MP APS-C image quality

The 18MP APS-C sensor is old, but it remains capable of detailed photographs with pleasing Canon colour in good light. The larger sensor and ability to select a lens give the camera genuine creative advantages over a basic phone, particularly for portraits, close-ups and blurred backgrounds.

JPEG files are ready to share, while RAW files retain more information for exposure and colour adjustments. RAW support is one of the camera’s most important learning features and gives it more editing flexibility than many inexpensive compact cameras.

Dynamic range and shadow recovery are limited compared with newer APS-C sensors. Expose carefully to protect highlights and avoid having to brighten very dark areas heavily in editing.

ISO and low-light performance

Native sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 6400 and can be expanded to ISO 12,800. Lower values provide the cleanest detail. Noise and colour degradation become increasingly visible at high ISO, so the expanded setting is better treated as an emergency option.

Autofocus performance

When using the optical viewfinder, the EOS 4000D employs a 9-point phase-detection autofocus system with a cross-type centre point. It is basic but reasonably responsive for stationary subjects and ordinary daylight photography.

Live View uses slower contrast-detection autofocus. It can hesitate or hunt, particularly in low light, and it does not provide the fast subject recognition expected from a modern mirrorless camera or smartphone.

The camera shoots continuously at approximately 3fps. This is enough for a short sequence of a predictable event, but it is not a strong choice for sport, wildlife or other rapid action. RAW bursts fill the buffer quickly.

Full HD video

Video recording reaches Full HD 1920 × 1080 at 30, 25 or 24fps. There is no 4K mode. Footage can look pleasant in controlled light, but the camera lacks dependable continuous autofocus during recording and does not include an external microphone input.

For best results, pre-focus carefully, use a stable support and record short, planned clips. A modern mirrorless camera is much easier for vlogging, moving subjects and handheld video.

Exposure controls and shutter speed

The mode dial includes automatic options as well as Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and full Manual exposure. These modes make the camera useful for learning how creative decisions affect a photograph.

Wi-Fi and Canon Camera Connect

Built-in Wi-Fi allows compatible images to be transferred to a phone and supports remote shooting through Canon Camera Connect. Remote release is helpful for group photographs and tripod work because it avoids touching the camera during the exposure.

Battery life

The LP-E10 battery is rated for approximately 500 photographs at room temperature under CIPA-style testing. Live View, video, Wi-Fi, flash use and cold conditions reduce that figure. The previous article’s reference to approximately 881 shots was not the standard official rating.

Battery life is one area where this simple DSLR can outperform many mirrorless cameras because the optical viewfinder consumes very little power. A spare battery is still worthwhile for travel or extended Live View use.

Lens choice and upgrade path

Many kits include an EF-S 18–55mm lens. It is suitable for general photography, but the camera becomes more rewarding with a lens chosen for a specific purpose, such as a fast 50mm for portraits, a telephoto zoom for distant subjects or an EF-S wide-angle lens for interiors and landscapes.

Canon’s current development focus is the mirrorless RF system rather than new EF/EF-S DSLR equipment. A large range of used DSLR lenses remains available, but buyers planning several future upgrades should compare the long-term cost with entering a mirrorless system now.

EOS 4000D versus EOS 2000D

The EOS 2000D is positioned above the 4000D. It offers a higher-resolution 24.1MP sensor, a larger and sharper 3-inch rear screen, NFC on supported versions and a metal lens mount. Both cameras use a 9-point viewfinder autofocus system, offer 3fps shooting and record Full HD rather than 4K.

If the price difference is small, the 2000D is generally the better purchase. The 4000D makes sense when it is substantially cheaper and the buyer accepts its cut-price screen, body and controls.

Is the Canon EOS 4000D worth buying in 2026?

The EOS 4000D remains capable of teaching exposure and producing attractive photographs, but it should be judged as a low-cost used or refurbished DSLR rather than a modern all-round camera. Its optical viewfinder, RAW files and interchangeable lenses provide room to learn, while its slow Live View and basic video reveal its age.

Buy it when the condition is good, the kit includes a useful lens and the price is clearly below better-equipped alternatives. If the EOS 2000D or a capable used mirrorless camera costs only slightly more, the newer or better-specified option will usually provide greater long-term value.
