Before buying, include the likely extras in the budget. You may need a fast microSD card, spare batteries, a charger, a protective case, a mount and a windscreen or audio adapter. Not every model includes those items, and the right accessories depend on what you intend to record.

Water and durability need realistic expectations

Many action cameras are more robust than a conventional camera, but they are not indestructible. Check the actual water depth rating, the need for a housing, temperature limits and the condition of doors and seals. Sand, saltwater, damaged mounts and repeated drops can still cause expensive problems.
