The GoPro HERO7 Black was the camera that introduced HyperSmooth stabilisation to the GoPro range. It is now an older action camera, but it can still be a worthwhile low-cost option for travel, cycling, walking and daylight action videoโprovided the price reflects its age.
This is not the model to buy for the newest low-light performance or the longest battery life. Its value is simple: compact 4K video, waterproofing, a huge mount ecosystem and stabilisation that was genuinely important for its generation.
Who is the HERO7 Black for?
It suits beginners and occasional users who find one in good condition at a low price. It is particularly useful for daylight outdoor clips, holidays, water sports and hands-free mounting. If you want the strongest current stabilisation, front-screen framing or more dependable long recording sessions, a later model is a better choice.

HyperSmooth stabilisation
HyperSmooth is the HERO7 Blackโs defining feature. It uses electronic stabilisation to smooth walking, riding and handheld movement without a separate gimbal. It remains useful for normal action footage, although newer GoPro generations provide stronger stabilisation and more flexibility in demanding modes.
HyperSmooth is not available in every resolution, frame rate or aspect ratio. Check the available settings for the exact type of video you plan to shoot rather than assuming it works in all modes.

Video and photo quality
The HERO7 Black records up to 4K at 60 fps and up to 1080p at 240 fps for slow motion. In good daylight, it can still produce sharp, colourful action footage. It also supports TimeWarp, time-lapse, live streaming and voice control.
Like most small-sensor action cameras of its era, it is much weaker in dim light. Expect more noise, softer detail and motion blur after sunset or indoors. It can shoot 12MP photos in JPEG and RAW, but video is its main strength.
Body, water resistance and controls
The HERO7 Black is compact, lightweight and waterproof to 10 metres (33 feet) without an additional housing when its door is securely closed. A dedicated waterproof housing is required for deeper water.
The rear touchscreen makes settings easier to change, while physical controls remain useful with gloves, wet hands or a mounted camera. The interface can sometimes feel slow, and the camera may warm up during longer 4K recordings.

Battery life and accessories
Battery life is modest by current standards and varies with resolution, stabilisation, temperature and battery health. A spare battery is sensible for a full day outdoors. The camera works with a large range of official and third-party mounts, which remains one of the main attractions of the GoPro system.

Verdict
The GoPro HERO7 Black is still a capable budget action camera when bought cheaply and in good condition. HyperSmooth, 4K/60 and the mature mount ecosystem make it useful for daylight outdoor footage.
Do not choose it at a price close to a newer camera. For occasional use and normal daylight action video, however, it remains a practical entry point into the GoPro system.
