Night photography becomes much easier when you stop searching for one universal setting. A city street, a portrait under artificial light, the Moon and the Milky Way all require different combinations of aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
As a general starting point on a tripod, use Manual mode, shoot RAW, select a wide or moderate aperture, keep ISO as low as the subject allows and adjust shutter speed for the required brightness and motion. The table below provides practical starting settings that you can refine after checking a test image and histogram.

These are starting points, not fixed rules. Light level, focal length, subject movement, sensor performance and artistic intent all affect the final settings.

Use the exposure triangle deliberately
Every night photograph balances three exposure controls. Aperture affects light and depth of field, shutter speed affects light and motion, and ISO affects recorded brightness and image noise. Our exposure triangle guide explains how they compensate for one another.
Choose aperture for depth of field and light
Wide apertures such as f/1.4 to f/2.8 gather more light and help keep shutter speed shorter. They suit stars, handheld street scenes and portraits with soft backgrounds. They also produce shallow depth of field, so precise focusing becomes critical.
For a cityscape on a tripod, f/5.6 to f/11 often provides better depth of field and more even sharpness. Very small apertures such as f/16 can create stronger starbursts around lights but may reduce fine detail through diffraction. Read Camera Aperture Explained for more detail.
Choose shutter speed for motion
A tripod allows exposures lasting several seconds or minutes when the scene is static. Long exposures smooth water, stretch vehicle lights into trails and reveal details that are too dark to see clearly with the eye.
Moving people, animals and foliage require shorter exposures. For a handheld night portrait, 1/125 second is a safer starting point than 1/30 second because the subject can move even when the photographer is steady. Our guide to camera shutter speed covers freezing and blurring motion.
Raise ISO when the photograph requires it
Use low ISO for static scenes on a tripod because shutter speed can become longer without introducing camera shake. For moving subjects or stars, increasing ISO may be necessary to maintain an appropriate shutter speed.
Do not underexpose severely just to keep ISO low. Brightening a very dark file can reveal as much or more noise than using a higher ISO in the camera. A sharp, properly timed ISO 3200 photograph is generally more useful than a blurred ISO 400 image. See Understanding Camera ISO.

Tripod versus handheld night photography
When using a tripod
- Use base or low ISO when the subject is static.
- Choose aperture for depth of field and optical quality.
- Let shutter speed become longer to complete the exposure.
- Use a two-second timer, cable release or remote control.
- Turn off automatic stabilisation when the manufacturer recommends doing so on a tripod.
- Check that the tripod, head and ground are stable before beginning a long exposure.
When shooting handheld
- Open the aperture as far as depth of field allows.
- Select a shutter speed suitable for both focal length and subject movement.
- Use Auto ISO with a sensible maximum if the light changes quickly.
- Use optical or in-body stabilisation for static subjects.
- Shoot short bursts; one frame may be sharper than the others.
- Support yourself against a wall or solid object when possible.
Stabilisation reduces camera movement but does not freeze the subject. It can help photograph a stationary building at 1/15 second, but it will not stop a walking person from becoming blurred.
How to focus at night
Autofocus needs contrast. Aim a single focus point at a bright edge, illuminated sign, distant lamp or the subjectโs eye. Once focus is acquired, avoid recomposing so far that the focus plane changes.
For stars, switch to manual focus and use magnified Live View or the electronic viewfinder. Select a bright star, enlarge it on screen and turn the focus ring until the point becomes as small and crisp as possible. Do not simply rotate the lens to the infinity stop; many lenses focus beyond infinity.
After focusing, take a test photograph and inspect the stars at high magnification. Tape the focus ring if it moves easily, and recheck it after changing focal length or temperature.

Star photography and the 500 rule
The traditional 500 rule estimates the longest shutter speed that may keep stars appearing as points:
Maximum shutter time โ 500 รท full-frame-equivalent focal length.
With a 20mm lens on full frame, the rule suggests approximately 25 seconds. On an APS-C camera, apply the crop factor before dividing.
This rule is only a rough starting point. High-resolution sensors, large prints and subjects near the celestial equator reveal star movement sooner. Using 300 instead of 500 provides a more conservative estimate, while specialised NPF calculations also consider aperture, pixel density and declination. Take a test image and shorten the exposure if the stars begin to elongate.
Settings for common night subjects
City streets and architecture
On a tripod, begin around ISO 100, f/8 and a shutter speed of several seconds. Watch illuminated signs, streetlamps and windows because highlights clip easily. Bracket exposures when the contrast between lights and shadows exceeds the sensorโs range.
Vehicle light trails
Start with ISO 100, f/8 and approximately 10 seconds. Increase shutter time for longer trails, or close the aperture if the image becomes too bright. Compose before traffic arrives and avoid touching the camera during the exposure.
Night portraits
Use a wide aperture and a shutter speed fast enough for the person, commonly 1/125 second or faster. Raise ISO as necessary. Place the subject near a soft light source such as a shop window, or add controlled flash while preserving some ambient exposure in the background.
The Moon
The Moon is sunlit and much brighter than the surrounding sky. Begin around ISO 100, f/8 and 1/250 second, then adjust for its phase and atmospheric conditions. Spot metering or manual exposure prevents the camera from turning the Moon into a featureless white disc.
Aurora
For an active, rapidly moving aurora, use a shorter exposure of roughly one to three seconds to preserve structure. A faint, slow display may require five to ten seconds. Use a wide aperture, raise ISO as necessary and focus on a bright star.

RAW, white balance and the histogram
RAW files preserve more editing flexibility than JPEGs, particularly for mixed lighting and deep shadows. They allow white balance to be changed after capture without the same penalty as heavily adjusting a JPEG.
Auto white balance can work well, but city lighting may produce inconsistent colour. A fixed starting point around 3200โ4000K often neutralises warm artificial light, while astrophotography frequently works between approximately 3500K and 4500K. Use the histogram and highlight warning rather than relying only on the screen. Preserve important bright signs and lamps, but remember that tiny direct light sources may clip even when the overall exposure is correct. Our histogram guide explains how to interpret tonal distribution.

Long-exposure noise reduction
Long-exposure noise reduction records a second dark frame after the photograph and uses it to reduce hot pixels and fixed-pattern noise. This can improve individual long exposures, but the camera becomes unavailable for approximately the same duration as the original exposure.
Leave it on when making a small number of important long exposures and time is not critical. Turn it off for star trails, rapid sequences, time-lapses or situations where gaps between frames would cause problems. Dark frames can be created separately during more advanced astrophotography workflows.
Common night photography problems
- Everything is blurred: stabilise the camera, shorten the exposure or use the timer.
- The subject is blurred but the background is sharp: increase shutter speed; stabilisation cannot stop subject movement.
- Stars are streaks: shorten shutter time or use a tracking mount.
- The photograph is very noisy: improve exposure, use a wider aperture, stack images or reduce ISO when a longer exposure is possible.
- Streetlights are featureless white patches: reduce exposure and check highlight warnings.
- Autofocus hunts: target a bright, contrast-rich edge or focus manually.
- Images are soft at f/16 or f/22: use a wider aperture to reduce diffraction.
- Condensation forms: allow equipment to change temperature gradually and use lens-heating equipment when conditions require it.

Safety when photographing at night
- Scout unfamiliar locations in daylight.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Use a headlamp, but avoid shining it toward roads, wildlife or other photographers.
- Wear reflective clothing near traffic and never stand in an active roadway.
- Check tides, weather, terrain and access restrictions before leaving.
- Carry spare batteries because cold conditions reduce battery performance.
- Keep equipment close and remain aware of people and activity around you.
Final checklist
- Shoot RAW.
- Choose aperture for depth of field and available light.
- Choose shutter speed for subject movement and star motion.
- Raise ISO only as much as required.
- Focus carefully and verify at high magnification.
- Use a tripod and timer for long exposures.
- Check the histogram and highlight warning.
- Review sharpness before leaving the location.
Conclusion
The best night photography settings depend on what must remain sharp and what is allowed to move. Static cityscapes favour low ISO and long tripod exposures; people and wildlife need faster shutter speeds; stars require wide apertures, high ISO and carefully limited exposure times.

Great article! Photography is something I’m interested in getting more advanced in. So far, i’m just using my android smartphone and adobe lightroom to edit! It takes some fantastic photos sometimes but it horribly fails at night time photography and this explains why! Needing to be able to manually control ISO, aperture, exposure and shutter speeds is critical. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that night photography has the benefit of not being affected by conditions such as weather and people in the picture itself (not in reference to them causing difficult conditions to shoot in lol). That’s one less thing to worry about! Thank you for all the little tips and photography secrets! I’m excited to put them to use when I buy my first professional camera (and tripod!!). ๐

Thank you for these tips. I’m looking to start taking my own pictures and I definitely needed an article like this to benefit from. While I’m still very new to the photography scene, I’ve wanted to do my own work for my writing business. Strange as that sounds, my novel settings take place in areas I grew up in and would love to take pics of areas that I mention in my works. Night pics would just add to my repertoire.
