The Walimex Pro WT-806 is a studio light stand, not a camera tripod. That distinction changes the buying decision completely. Its job is to hold a flash, LED panel, reflector arm or similar studio accessory high above the ground through its 5/8-inch spigot connection. It does not have a camera head, quick-release plate or the controls needed to frame a photograph.
At up to 256 cm high, the WT-806 is useful in a home studio or on location when light needs to come from above the subject. Its spring damping is the key feature: when a section is loosened, the internal spring helps prevent a mounted light from dropping abruptly. That protects both the modifier and the user’s hands, but it is not a substitute for checking every lock before use.
What it is designed to hold
The top fitting is a standard 5/8-inch / 16 mm spigot with a 1/4-inch thread, making it suitable for many photography lights and accessories. The quoted maximum load is about 6 kg, but use the stand according to the actual load, height and modifier size. A small bare flash is easy work. A large softbox catches wind and creates leverage, so it can make a stand unstable long before the listed payload is reached.
Do not mount a camera directly on it and treat it as a photographic tripod. A light stand lacks the broad, low geometry and controlled camera head of a proper tripod. For camera support, see GottaPics’ Walimex Pro FT-665T review.

Height, footprint and stability
The maximum 256 cm height is practical for positioning a key light above a seated subject, lifting a background light or placing a reflector above camera level. It also increases the risk of a top-heavy setup. Set the legs fully open, keep the light as low as the shot allows, and make sure the floor is firm and level. At full extension, do not leave a light unattended.
The three legs create a broad support area, but that does not guarantee stability outdoors. Wind is particularly dangerous with umbrellas and softboxes. Sandbags placed on the legs—not hanging from the top—are the normal way to lower the centre of gravity. Keep people clear when adjusting height and never carry the stand with a light attached.

Why spring damping matters
Light stands are adjusted by loosening clamps in sequence. Without damping, a raised section can fall quickly once its clamp is released. The WT-806’s spring-damped sections make that descent more controlled. It is still good practice to support the section with one hand while opening a clamp, then lower it slowly before moving to the next one.
Check the clamps regularly and do not force them beyond their normal closing pressure. A loose clamp can allow a light to slide; an over-tightened clamp can wear or crack a part. Inspect the spigot, screws and legs before use, especially after transport. The official Walimex WT-806 listing identifies this model as a 256 cm spring-damped light stand.

Where it works well
The WT-806 suits a compact home studio, portrait lighting, small product work and off-camera flash setups where the light needs height. It is also useful as a reflector or background-light support when fitted with the appropriate accessory. For a simple explanation of placing and controlling flash, see GottaPics’ camera flash guide.
A buyer who uses large softboxes outside, a boom arm or a very heavy strobe should look for a heavier stand with an appropriate load rating and footprint. The right stand is determined by the whole rig, not only the weight of the light body.
Using modifiers safely
Umbrellas and softboxes create a large sail. Even a light modifier can pull a tall stand over when a door opens, someone walks past or the stand is used outdoors. Keep the modifier centred over the stand, use sandbags on the legs and lower the stand before moving it. A boom arm shifts the weight sideways, so it needs a stand specifically rated and balanced for that arrangement.
These precautions are more important than the nominal payload when a light is raised near its maximum height.
30-second decision
The Walimex WT-806 is a useful tall, spring-damped light stand for flashes, LEDs and other studio accessories. It is not a camera tripod. Its value is its 256 cm reach and safer controlled lowering of the sections; its limitation is the normal physics of a tall stand with a large modifier in wind.
