Cooau Action Camera Review: What to Expect From a Budget 4K Camera

Cooau action camera 20 mp

COOAU sold several similar-looking budget action cameras under closely related 4K/20MP listings. This review is therefore most useful as a practical guide to the type of camera shown here, especially if you find it second-hand or discounted. Before buying, compare the exact model number, included accessories and recording modes in the seller’s listing.

A budget action camera can be useful for holidays, cycling, walking, snorkelling and occasional clips in good daylight. It should not be expected to match a current GoPro, DJI or Insta360 camera in low light, stabilisation, app reliability or long-term support.

Who is this COOAU action camera for?

It makes most sense for a beginner who wants a simple, low-cost action camera and a bundle of mounts without paying for a premium system. It is a reasonable choice for recording short daylight clips, not for professional work, reliable low-light footage or demanding sports where the best stabilisation matters.

If you are deciding between a budget camera and a more expensive model, see our guide to choosing an action camera.

Video and photo quality

Listings for this type of COOAU camera commonly include 4K recording at up to 30 fps, lower-resolution video options and still-image settings up to 20MP. Use 4K/30 in good daylight for the best chance of detailed footage. Do not assume every mode uses the same image quality or stabilisation.

The wide-angle lens is useful for landscapes, helmet mounts and group shots, but it also creates the familiar fisheye look. In weak light, expect more noise, softer detail and less convincing colour than from a larger-sensor camera.

Stabilisation and controls

Electronic image stabilisation can reduce ordinary hand shake, but it cannot fully smooth rough movement in the way newer premium action cameras can. Stabilisation may also be available only in selected resolutions and frame rates. Check the mode you plan to use before an important trip or activity.

The rear display is used for framing and menus. On a low-cost camera, expect basic menus and a less refined interface than on a current mainstream model. The remote control and Wi-Fi app can be convenient, but compatibility and reliability should be checked before relying on them.

Water use and accessories

The transparent waterproof housing—not the bare camera—is the part intended for underwater use. Check that its gasket is clean, its latch is fully closed and the case has no cracks before putting it in water. Waterproof-depth claims differ between COOAU models and cases, so follow the manual for the exact kit you own.

A strong point of these kits is the accessory bundle. It commonly includes two batteries, a waterproof housing, mounts, straps, a remote control and sometimes an external microphone. Contents vary by seller, so treat a product listing as the final word on what is included.

Battery, connections and app

Many bundles include two 1200mAh batteries, which is helpful for a day out. Real recording time depends on resolution, screen use, Wi-Fi, temperature and battery age. Budget-camera battery claims should be treated as best-case figures, not a promise of continuous recording.

The camera supports microSD storage and, depending on the exact version, may include USB, mini HDMI and Wi-Fi connections. Check whether the current phone app is still available and compatible with your device before purchasing a used example.

Key features to check before buying

  • Exact model number and whether it records 4K at 30 fps
  • Which resolutions support electronic stabilisation
  • Whether the waterproof housing, mounts and spare battery are included
  • Current app availability for your Android or iPhone
  • Condition of the housing seal, batteries and microSD-card slot
  • Whether the external microphone is included and compatible with that model

COOAU 4K action camera specifications

Pros

  • Low-cost entry point for casual action video
  • Wide-angle view is useful for travel and outdoor clips
  • Accessory bundles can offer useful value
  • Two batteries are often included
  • Waterproof housing expands where the camera can be used

Cons

  • Exact features vary between similar COOAU models
  • Low-light quality is limited
  • Electronic stabilisation is less capable than premium systems
  • App support and accessory compatibility may not age well
  • Do not rely on headline specification claims without checking the exact model

Verdict

This type of COOAU camera can be a practical purchase if it is inexpensive, complete and in good condition. It is best treated as a simple daylight camera with useful accessories, rather than an alternative to a current flagship action camera.

For occasional travel and outdoor clips, it can be enough. For reliable stabilisation, better low-light footage or serious video work, spending more on a newer model will be worthwhile.

    1. I am guessing that This is Spanish 🙂 As I understand you don’t like the camera.
I am not saying it is a perfect one, but I am always thinking at the price/quality ratio
In my opinion, it is a good action camera.
And about what you are saying, that it is not connecting through WI-FI to any phone…
In this particular case, maybe the camera you bought is faulty.
Try to exchange it, and kindly leave your opinion again here. Cheers
