The GoPro HERO8 Black introduced two changes that remain useful: built-in folding mounting fingers and HyperSmooth 2.0 stabilisation. It is an older camera now, but it can still be a strong low-cost option for daylight action video if you find it at a clear discount.
It records 4K video at up to 60 fps, handles slow motion up to 1080p/240 fps and has a well-developed GoPro mounting ecosystem. Its drawbacks are equally important: a small rear screen, modest battery life in demanding modes, heat during long recordings and a lens cover that is not user-replaceable.
Who is the HERO8 Black for?
The HERO8 Black suits travel, cycling, hiking, water sports and creators who want compact, well-stabilised footage without carrying a gimbal. Its folding mounting fingers attach directly to compatible mounts, so there is no need for a separate frame for normal use.

Design and mounting
At about 126 g, the HERO8 Black is compact but robust. Its two folding fingers sit beneath the camera body and unfold when you need a mount, then fold away for handheld use. The USB-C port, microSD-card slot and removable battery are behind the side door.
The front lens cover is tougher than standard glass, but it is not designed to be removed by the user. If the cover is scratched or broken, repair is more complicated than on models with a replaceable lens cover.
4K video and HyperSmooth 2.0
The HERO8 Black records up to 4K at 60 fps, 2.7K at up to 120 fps and 1080p at up to 240 fps. It offers digital lenses including SuperView, Wide, Linear and Narrow, giving more framing options than basic action cameras.
HyperSmooth 2.0 is the key feature. It provides strong electronic stabilisation for walking, cycling and hand-held action. High and Boost modes apply a greater crop to prioritise smoother footage. The results remain good for its generation, although newer cameras have improved further in difficult light and very rough movement.
TimeWarp 2.0 creates stabilised moving time lapses and can switch briefly to real-time speed. This is useful for travel sequences where a normal time-lapse would look too jerky.
Video, audio and live streaming
In good light, the HERO8 Black produces detailed, colourful footage. Low-light video is improved over older GoPros but still limited by the small sensor: noise and softer detail become more visible after sunset or indoors.
The three-microphone system and wind-noise reduction help with casual audio. For serious speech or vlogging, use a compatible audio solution rather than expecting a tiny action camera to replace a dedicated microphone.
The camera supports 1080p live streaming to compatible services through GoPro’s mobile software. App features and streaming support can change, so check current compatibility before buying used.
Waterproofing and controls
The HERO8 Black is waterproof to 10 metres (33 feet) without an additional housing when the side door is correctly closed. Use a dedicated waterproof housing for deeper water. The 2-inch rear touchscreen is clear and convenient on land but can be awkward with wet fingers or underwater.
Battery life and heat
The camera uses a removable 1220mAh battery. Runtime varies with resolution, frame rate, stabilisation, screen use, temperature and battery condition. High-resolution modes generate heat, and extended static recording in warm conditions can lead to reduced runtime or an automatic thermal shutdown.
For a full day outdoors, bring a spare battery and use a fast, reliable microSD card. Avoid leaving the camera recording at 4K in direct sun when there is little airflow.

Choose a newer model if you need a front screen, the best low-light performance or easier lens-cover replacement. Otherwise, the HERO8 Black can still deliver very good results for its price.
