Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Review: An Older Pro Telephoto

Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM

The original Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is an older professional telephoto zoom, not the later IS II or IS III version. Its constant f/2.8 aperture, robust L-series construction and image stabilisation made it a workhorse for events, portraits and sport. Today it is mainly a used-market choice, where condition and price matter as much as its headline specification.

Why constant f/2.8 still matters

Unlike a budget telephoto that becomes f/5.6 at the long end, this lens stays at f/2.8 throughout 70-200mm. That gives a faster shutter speed in poor light and stronger subject separation at the same framing. On a Canon APS-C DSLR it gives the angle of view of roughly 112-320mm, useful for sport and distant portraits, but it can feel tight indoors.

The compromises of the original version

This is a large, heavy lens at roughly 1.5kg before the camera. Its optical stabilisation helps with hand-held shots of still subjects, but it does not stop a player, animal or performer from moving. The original IS system and autofocus design are older than later versions, so do not assume it performs like a modern mirrorless 70-200mm. It also has no native RF mount; EOS R bodies need Canon’s EF-EOS R adapter.

For an APS-C DSLR used mainly in daylight, the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM is dramatically lighter and cheaper. This 70-200mm earns its weight only when you need the f/2.8 aperture, professional handling and full-frame EF compatibility. The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is the smaller low-cost option for portraits in tighter spaces.

Buying used

Check autofocus, zoom smoothness, tripod collar, switches, front and rear elements, and stabilisation before paying serious money. A lens with haze, fungus, impact damage or a failing IS unit can cost more to repair than it is worth. A clean example can still make very good photographs on Canon EF DSLRs.

What you need besides the lens

A solid strap or monopod is sensible for long sessions. Canon’s support page confirms the original model covered here.

30-second decision

A clean original 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM can still be worthwhile for Canon EF shooters who need a fast professional telephoto at used prices. It is heavy, old and not native to RF, so casual users are usually better served by a lighter modern option.
