The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is one of the most useful telephoto zooms for a Canon APS-C DSLR. It is compact for its reach, includes image stabilisation and uses STM focusing. For daylight wildlife, travel, children playing outdoors and distant details, it is usually a far better starting point than Canonโs older 75-300mm lenses.
APS-C reach without a huge lens
This is an EF-S lens and fits Canon APS-C DSLRs only. Its 55-250mm range gives the angle of view of roughly 88-400mm on full frame. The crop factor narrows the view; it does not make the subject physically larger, but it allows distant subjects to occupy more of the frame. At 250mm, good technique and a stable stance still matter.

IS and STM make a real difference
Image Stabilizer reduces blur caused by your hands when photographing a still subject. It helps when you are travelling light or shooting at the long end, but it does not freeze a running child or a flying bird. STM autofocus is quieter and smoother than Canonโs older entry-level motors, which is useful for stills and basic video on compatible DSLR bodies.
The f/4-5.6 aperture is normal for a compact budget telephoto and works best in decent daylight. Indoors or near sunset, ISO rises quickly and a fast shutter speed is still required for movement. The EF 75-300mm III reaches 300mm but lacks stabilisation in its basic version; that is why the 55-250mm is generally the smarter APS-C choice.

How it fits in a kit
Pair it with the EF-S 10-18mm for wide landscapes and interiors, plus a normal lens or kit zoom between them. It is not compatible with a full-frame EF DSLR and it is not a native RF lens, so check your camera mount before buying.

What you need besides the lens
A simple lens hood, a clean front element and a camera strap that supports the lens are enough for most users. Canonโs support page has the official specifications.

30-second decision
For a Canon APS-C DSLR owner who wants affordable telephoto reach, this lens is still an excellent choice. It is light, stabilised and easier to use than older budget zooms, but it is a daylight lens rather than a solution for dim sport or serious bird photography.
