The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a pancake prime lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs. It is tiny, light and brighter than a kit zoom at a similar focal length. For street photography, travel, food, family pictures and a camera that is easy to carry, that combination matters more than an impressive specification list.
A 24mm lens that behaves like 38mm
Because it is an EF-S lens, it is for Canon APS-C DSLRs only, not full-frame EF bodies. The 1.6x crop gives a field of view close to 38mm on full frame: wider than a traditional 50mm “normal” lens but not a dramatic wide angle. It is good for telling a story around a subject while keeping the perspective natural. The small size makes an EOS DSLR much less conspicuous than it is with a standard zoom.

What f/2.8 gives you – and what it does not
The f/2.8 aperture lets in more light than a typical kit zoom at 24mm, so it can lower ISO or use a faster shutter speed indoors. It also gives some background separation at close distances. On APS-C, though, it will not blur the background like a full-frame 35mm f/2.8 used at the same framing. There is no image stabilisation, so it helps with exposure but cannot stop blur from a moving subject.
STM focusing is quiet and more suitable for video than older budget Canon motors, but the lens is not a macro lens and it does not replace a zoom. Choose the EF-S 10-18mm for much wider interiors and landscapes, or the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM when portraits and stronger background blur are the priority.

Who it suits today
It is still a very good inexpensive prime for anyone continuing with a Canon APS-C DSLR. It makes most sense when you want to leave the kit zoom at home and accept one fixed viewpoint. It is not a future-facing native RF-S option, and it will not fit a full-frame EF DSLR.

What you need besides the lens
A small lens hood and a spare battery are more useful than extra accessories. Canon’s product page confirms the official lens details.

30-second decision
Choose this lens if you use a Canon APS-C DSLR and want a genuinely small, bright everyday prime. It is excellent for portability and natural-looking travel pictures, but fixed framing, no IS and EF-S-only compatibility mean it is a deliberate choice rather than a replacement for every lens.
