An action camera is a small, wide-angle digital camera designed to record video and photographs while you are moving, travelling or doing an activity. Its defining feature is not a particular brand, resolution or price. It is the combination of compact size, a wide view and the ability to be mounted where a larger camera would be inconvenient.

What makes a camera an action camera?

Most action cameras are designed around a very wide lens, a compact body and mounting options. They are often used on a helmet, chest, handlebar, vehicle, small tripod or another secure position. This produces an immersive point-of-view perspective while leaving the user’s hands free.

What an action camera is not

An action camera is not automatically better than a phone, compact camera or interchangeable-lens camera. It normally has a small sensor, very wide field of view and no meaningful optical zoom. That makes it less suitable for portraits, low-light work, close detail, distant wildlife and situations where lens choice matters.

It can sometimes be used as a temporary dashcam-style camera, but a dedicated dashcam is normally better for permanent vehicle recording because it is designed for loop recording, parking modes and automatic incident capture.

Water protection and durability

Action cameras are often more robust than conventional cameras, but they are not indestructible. Water depth limits, dust protection and impact resistance depend on the model and on the condition of its doors, seals and housing. Saltwater, sand and poor mounting can damage any camera.

How is it different from a 360 camera?

An ordinary action camera captures one wide view in front of its lens. A 360 camera uses two or more lenses to capture the scene in every direction, then combines the footage in software. A 360 camera can later choose the view during editing, while a standard action camera gives a simpler, more direct wide-angle recording.

Get an action camera if you repeatedly need its particular strengths: a secure mount, wide immersive view, compact body and moving video. If you mostly want better family photographs, portraits, zoom or low-light footage, your phone or main camera may be the more useful upgrade.
