Sirui NT-1005X Review: A Versatile Aluminium Travel Tripod

Sirui NT-1005X for low shooting

The Sirui NT-1005X is a compact aluminium travel tripod built around versatility rather than the lowest possible weight. Its 180-degree folding legs, E-10 ball head, double-extension centre column and removable monopod leg give it more options than a basic travel tripod. It folds to about 36 cm, weighs roughly 1.44 kg and reaches around 148 cm as a tripod. Those are useful numbers for travel, but the most important thing is how the design behaves: it packs short, becomes fairly tall, and needs sensible handling when fully extended.

The NT-1005X can still be a good choice for a light-to-medium camera kit, travel landscapes, portraits, self-portraits and occasional monopod use. It is not the ideal platform for a heavy telephoto lens, a large video head or very windy locations. The quoted 8 kg load rating describes its tested capacity, not a guarantee of equal stability with every lens and shooting position.

Compact to carry, taller when needed

With five leg sections, the NT-1005X folds down to about 36 cm. That makes it easy to fit inside luggage or a day bag. The trade-off is that the final sections are narrower than the upper ones. At low to medium height the tripod should feel more composed; at full height, especially with the centre column raised, vibration becomes easier to introduce.

The double-extension centre column is what allows this tripod to reach approximately 148 cm. It is useful when a higher viewpoint is more important than maximum stability, but it is not the setting to choose for a critical long exposure. Keep the column down where possible, use the lowest workable leg height, and trigger the camera with a two-second timer or remote release. The hook below the column can take a small stable weight, but a bag that swings in the wind can make sharpness worse.

The E-10 head and camera balance

The kit includes Siruiโ€™s E-10 ball head and TY-50E Arca-compatible quick-release plate. The head gives fast positioning for stills and has a separate panning base, useful when keeping the camera level for a simple panorama. The safety pin in the clamp helps prevent a compatible plate from sliding out accidentally, but the plate still needs to be tightened and checked before letting go of the camera.

Arca compatibility is useful because replacement plates and L-brackets are widely available. An L-bracket is particularly helpful when shooting vertical images: it keeps the camera centred above the tripod rather than hanging it off to one side. With a long lens, use the lens collar if one is available, keep the centre of gravity above the head, and do not assume that a package below 8 kg will behave like a short standard zoom.

Monopod and low-angle options

One leg can be removed and used as a monopod. This is helpful when a tripod is impracticalโ€”at an event, while walking, or when you need some support without occupying much ground. A monopod steadies vertical movement; it does not replace a tripod for a long exposure, a self-portrait or an unattended camera.

The legs have three angle positions, approximately 22ยฐ, 52ยฐ and 86ยฐ, and the centre column can be reversed for a low camera position. That opens useful options for flowers, foreground-heavy landscapes and product work. Reversing a camera is less convenient for frequent adjustments, so it is better for a carefully composed shot than for fast-moving work.

Where its limits show

The NT-1005X is more substantial than a tiny carbon-fibre travel tripod, but it is still a travel design. With the legs narrow, column high and a front-heavy lens attached, wind and small touches to the camera can show up in the image. This does not make it a poor tripod; it explains why setup matters. A compact mirrorless body with a standard zoom is a much more natural match than a heavy DSLR with a 70โ€“200 mm lens.

For a lighter specialist support, see the Sirui AM-223. If your priority is packing exceptionally small, the Sirui T-025X is the more compact alternative.

30-second decision

The Sirui NT-1005X is worth considering if you want one travel support that can serve as a tripod, a low-angle support and a monopod. It is most convincing with a light-to-medium camera kit. Keep the centre column down for sharp long exposures and avoid pairing it with a large telephoto in wind. Choose a heavier tripod if that type of work is your normal use.

Final assessment

The NT-1005X is an older but practical travel tripod whose appeal is flexibility. The short folded length, usable working height, E-10 head, reversible column and monopod conversion solve real travel problems. Its limits are also clear: five-section legs, a raised double column and long front-heavy lenses reduce confidence. For a balanced camera kit and a photographer who will use its different configurations, it remains a sensible design. For current product and support information, see Siruiโ€™s official website.
