The Peak Design Travel Tripod is built around a clear idea: remove the empty space that makes ordinary tripods awkward to pack. The result folds to roughly the diameter of a water bottle, has an integrated low-profile head and includes a hidden phone mount.
It is a very good fit for someone who values a clean, portable system and will use it regularly. Its premium price and specialised head are the important compromises: it is not the right answer for every heavy-lens photographer or anyone who wants the freedom to fit any conventional head.
A different approach to travel-tripod packing
The legs nest around the centre column and head rather than folding around a bulky ball head. That makes a meaningful difference in a backpack or cabin bag. The aluminium version weighs about 1.56 kg; carbon fibre saves roughly 290 g, which is useful for frequent travel but not a transformation in stability.
The ball head uses one adjustment ring instead of separate controls. It keeps the shape compact and makes basic framing quick, but it gives less separate control than a traditional head. The centre column must be raised a little to access the head movement, which feels unusual at first.

Stability and the limits of a small system
Peak Design rates the tripod at 20 lb / 9.1 kg. That is adequate for many full-frame cameras and lenses, but a capacity number does not erase leverage. A long lens, fully raised column or exposed wind can still make a short travel tripod less steady than a larger one.
For a long exposure, use the thick leg sections first and keep the column down unless the framing needs it. The low and inverted modes are valuable for foreground work, but they require the same care as any camera placed close to the ground.
What to check before buying
Check whether the particular listing is aluminium or carbon fibre, and whether the plate and phone mount are included. The system uses a compact proprietary-style head; an adapter exists for other heads, but that gives up part of the neat design you are paying for.

Using it well in the field
The clever packing shape is the reason to choose this tripod, so use it in a way that preserves stability. Extend the lower leg sections only when needed, keep the camera strap from catching the head and use the hook only with a weight that cannot swing. In strong wind, a lower composition may produce a sharper image than insisting on full height.
The built-in phone mount is genuinely convenient for self-timers and simple video, but a phone is still affected by wind and touch input. Start recording before stepping away, or use a remote trigger.
Who should spend more?
Photographers using a 70โ200mm lens regularly, or who need a level horizon for video pans, may be happier with a larger tripod and separate head. This is an elegant travel system, not a replacement for every type of support.
A practical setup routine
Before every important shot, check the leg locks, head lock and mounting plate separately. Extend the thickest leg sections first and place the camera over the centre of the tripod. These small habits matter more to sharpness than a marketing payload number. A remote release, two-second timer or electronic shutter can then prevent your hand from becoming the remaining source of movement.
Use the support at the lowest height that gives the composition you need. Raising a centre column is sometimes necessary, but it is normally the first part of a tripod system to reveal vibration.
Condition and value matter with older stock
Many of these models are no longer the newest option on the market. That does not make them useless, but it changes the buying decision. Compare the price with current alternatives, look for missing plates or worn locks, and make sure replacement parts are available if the support will carry valuable equipment. A lower price is only worthwhile when the tripod can still be used safely and consistently.
For any used tripod, operate every lock and hinge before mounting a camera. Smooth movement and positive locking are more important than a clean-looking finish.
30-second decision
Buy it for its unusually tidy packed shape, integrated phone option and fast everyday deployment. Skip it if you mainly use heavy telephotos, want a conventional separate head or care more about price than volume.
