If you are a photographer or love to capture different nature events, you are much familiar with the type and cost of any camera. It is not as cheap as it seems. And if you do not know it, then it’s a rude awakening! Camera body cost lies between thousands of dollars uncommonly. It is just a camera body. The lens of the camera is worth expensive and challenging to purchase.

Camera lenses are of different styles and even more unique than a body. Sometimes you become more cautious about your loving thing, take good care of it, and save it from any harm. You take a soft cotton material and very securely safe it.

Same wise for your camera gear and equipment, you must clean and care of your camera types of equipment and parts from any internal or external harm. But there is no need to worry much if you are responsible and taking good care of your equipment, then it will last for many years, and you will enjoy capturing many new events from the same lens or body.

Supplies needed for clean and care:

It’s fantastic to know that the supplies you need to maintain your camera are so cheap.   • Zipped bag: this is the bag where all necessaries for your camera cleanliness. This bag must be protected and be dust-free. As towels, wipes, brushes, and lens cleaning solutions are inside of it, you must be cautious about its shield.

Reverse ring macro photography – why this method?

Macro photography is fascinating, and it is something that any photographer at least tried, from taking close-up pictures with flowers, shells, water drops, etc., to even looking in the eye of a fly.

For this macro level, the required equipment is not affordable for most of us; we are talking about thousands of dollars for lens and flash gear. But with reverse ring macro, photography is cheap and amazing.

So, what do we need for that?

A digital camera

It must be DSLR or mirrorless because you’ll need to be able to disconnect the lens for reversing.

The reverse ring     

This is excellent staff, very helpful and very cheap. It costs about 3-5$, so everybody can afford one. The reverse ring has to be attached directly to the camera, and you will connect the lens to the ring.

Very important is that when you buy the ring to buy it for the lens diameter. If, for example, you have a 52mm lens, you should buy a 52mm reverse ring. You can see the reverted lens connected through the reverse ring to the camera in the picture below.

Observe how the aperture metallic blade is blocked with some paper in the open position, left side down of the lens. You’ll need a lot of light, and that’s how you’ll get it quickly.

Tripod, remote control, and lighting

Depending on what you are shooting, you’ll need different staff. Let’s say you are indoor, and you want to take pictures with some part of a coin, or some jewel, or anything that is not alive – that will not move.

In this case, for sure, you will move (handshake), and for this, you will need a tripod and remote controller. For lighting, a lamp will do, I bought one for 12$, but there is a massive range of options. So, cheap again. A remote controller should not cost more than 10$.

If you’re shooting outdoor insects, for example, then you’ll not use a tripod and remote controller. This is a difficult one if the happy bug doesn’t want to stay still. For better lighting, you can use a flashgun with diffuse.

  1. Set the camera in manual mode. Because you reverse the lens, there will be no other contact with the camera than the plastic reverse ring.
  2. That means that they will not be able to communicate, so you will have to take care of focus. Depending on lens type, using a manual focus ring or moving the camera forward or backward until you get the target’s subject.
  3. You’ll also need to take care of the aperture. Near the lens metallic contacts, you will see a little bracket, the controller for aperture. When it is normally connected, the camera controls it, but now that it is reverted, you will have to do it manually. Just open it to maximum and stack it with something to stay like that. If not, your photos will be very dark.

Camera flash types

When shooting pictures, sometimes natural light is not enough. In which case, we need to use an artificial light source for great image quality. There are many choices – from the built-in flash of the camera to flashguns and studio flashes.

Today I will write a general presentation about the camera flashgun and camera flash types, hoping that this will give you a good idea of what you’ll need to buy to archive the best picture quality.

Camera flash types

Most modern cameras have a built-in flash. This is the most basic artificial light a photographer can use, but it is constrained. It is not powerful enough, the subject should be relatively close, and it can not correctly illuminate groups of people – for example. Also, it is not performing well with a very close subject, as in macro photography, it will drop the lens shadow in the picture.

With this in mind, well talk about more advanced lighting systems, which will prove to be handy gear for great images.

Hot Shoe flash – flashgun

This is the most popular type of flash. You have a wide range of different models to choose from, the camera manufacturers or independents, with prices for any budget. The most cheaper (basic models) have more power than a built-in flash and synchronize with the camera’s TTL metering and AF, automatically providing the best exposure.

Hammerhead flash

Called like that because of their shape, they are usually attached to the camera’s side with a bracket that screws into the tripod bush. From here on, it works like the flashgun, connects through a wire, and TTL module connector to the camera’s hot shoe to provide AF and TTL metering.

The hammerhead guns offer more mobility than flashguns (tilt and swivel heads) and generally more power. It can be mounted on both the right or left side of the camera or separate tripods to source light as needed. Some of them can trigger the camera so that you can be in control from different locations – you don’t necessarily need to be behind the camera at all times when executing shots.

It can be used with diffusers or reflectors – as required by the task.

Macro flash systems

There are two main flash systems for macro:

Macro flash – are usually high performance. They can provide adjustable light for different angles. The macro flash can shoot continuously or flash, giving you maximum control over light power and direction essential in capturing image details.

This is the most expensive professional gear. But if you can afford it, you’ll soon find out that this investment worth every penny.

Ring flash – is a cheaper alternative but still with excellent results. It comes with adapter rings for different lens diameters and with colored flash diffusers so you can give your picture some lovely color shades. The ring flash offers a shadow-free image. As the flashlight source is mounted on the lens and the light power is low, it is designed for close-up pictures.

Please keep in mind that this will not work with the reverse ring technique. As in this specific case, you are reversing the lens to attach them to the camera through the reverse ring medium. In which situation, the side of the lens to which we refer when we talk about the ”diameter of the lens” (the location where the ring flash must be mounted) is now already used.

For this scenario, I would recommend a gun flash, hammerhead flash, or a studio flash (with diffusers or reflectors – as needed), or just the natural light when possible.

Studio flash

Studio flashes are designed to give the photographer absolute lighting control for their pictures.
Usually, much higher-powered than flashguns can be used with diffusers and/or reflectors for directing the light as needed.

The studio photographer can use a single light source or multiple heads depending on the task – portraiture, fashion, model, macro, etc.

The same is the case with all other stars. In astrophotography, Ha-A and Ha-B filters allow us to see those wavelengths and patterns of the stars and other objects in the sky that we cannot explore with the naked eye.

Unlike other night filters, these filters allow capturing the most natural images possible of the light-polluted sky. You can also capture the moon perfectly in any phase, stars sharper, and add artistic details to the sky’s existing colors.

The H-alpha filter wavelength is typically 0.7Å (0.07 nm), which can be reduced to 0.5Å to enhance the contrast in details. It comes in three varieties:

  1. Cut-off filter. As the name shows, the cut-off filters cuts off the lights below the wavelength of 656.3mm and pass 90 percent of the light above this wavelength. The cut-off filter is good to use under light-polluted skies with hydrogen-alpha emission nebula.
  2. Wide, narrowband filter. This one is used to pass the wavelengths in a narrow band. The wide narrowband improves the contrast in the images. The wide, narrow band is recommended to be used with CCD cameras.
  3. Very narrow-band filter. These are used for solar work and are used with an energy rejection pre-filter.

The hydrogen beta is used in improving the contrast of the image and detail the light emission source. Many hydrogen beta filters are for visual observing only. These do not include the UV/IR blocking characteristic, so they are perfect for night photography.

Fog filter

Fog filter is another option for night photography. It has more to do with adding creative and special effects in images than removing light pollution or enhancing it.

  1. Hard Edge GND is useful in situations with high-contrast. This type of filter aligns the hard edge in the center with the horizon. Usually, a two-stop or three-stop hard edge GND filter is enough to balance the shot. Hard-edge filters can affect the image’s quality when used in high contrast situations, and their horizon is usually flat. Soft edge filters are often useful than these filters.
  2. Soft Edge Graduated neutral density filters are used to softly blend the gradient across the filter, so the line is less obvious. These filters are handy in situations where there is no clear horizon in sight. Soft edge GND slowly transits from dark to clear. This gradual transition makes them an excellent accessory for photographers in the non-flat horizon and is a lot better in landscape photography than hard-edge GND.
  3. Reverse Graduated Neutral Density (GND) Filter is a new addition in the category of GND filters. These filters give optimal results for sunset shoots, i.e., when you shoot against the sunlight and the scene is near the horizon. These filters are dark at the hard-edge or their background and gradually soften up towards their top. A photographer can face problems in sunset shoot with both soft edge and hard edge filter. Using a hard-edge GND filter makes the sky too dark, whereas a soft edge GND filter can make sunlight overexposed in the image. A reverse graduated neutral density filter eliminates these problems by balancing the sky and sun for your image, giving out balanced exposure.

Color Lens Filters

These are color warming or cooling filters and are widely used to alter the white balance of the camera by changing the balance of white light and reaching the camera’s sensor. Color filters also alter the color in the final image.

Now digital cameras and DSLRs have built-in technologies to handle different light sources and to alter white light, or these effects can be applied in Lightroom or through Photoshop.

There is also an automatic white light adjustment feature in most of the cameras, but the color filters are still handy when it comes to manual adjustment of white light.

There are two general categories of color/cooling/warming filters.

  1. Light balance filters: these filters work the same as the white balance setting of a digital camera. They alter the image’s temperature and gives it a bluer (cooling filter) or more orange (warming filter) touch. The cooling filter introduces the blue tone in the image and mimics the shooting towards the end of the day by adding the same blue tone. Warming filter takes the temperature of the image towards the warm side, such as shooting in a golden hour, but it won’t reduce the intensity of shadows and brightness at midday.
  2. Colored filters: these filters are just a piece of colored glass to place in front of the lens. Depending upon the color of the glass, these filters change the seeing capability of the camera. The color filters are available in blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and yellow-green colors.

Night photography filters:

Macro flash systems – Why is the light important?

When it comes to macro photography, one essential thing besides the camera and lens is the lighting unit. Taking a macro picture is about details. Without a good light source, natural or provided by the artist, the image will not be sharp enough and, together with the amount of noise, will result in a low-quality picture.

When it comes to digital cameras, there are plenty of types for you to choose from. We have compact cameras, which are smaller and very easy to carry everywhere, and we have cameras with interchangeable lenses, which are bigger and require more than just a pocket to take it on your trip. You will need a bag for your lens, tripod, flashgun, batteries, cleaning tools, etc.

In the digital camera world, there are so many options. The best way to do it is to think first about its final scope. Will you use it to simply shooting photos for your memories, for social networks – so everyone can see where you’re traveling, or you want to shoot more professionally?

Understanding your goal will lead to having the right tool for the right price.

Standard compact camera

This is usually a small, light, and reasonably cheap camera known as Point and Shoot. It is a basic entry model into the digital photography world. Standard compact cameras usually are fully automatic. In rare cases, offer manual exposure options.

Usually, they have a small zoom lens that folds into the camera, a built-in flash, and an LCD screen – no eye viewfinder. HD video recording, image stabilization, and Wi-Fi connectivity may be available with this type of camera. Usually, low-quality photos, but it is not a rule.

Some high-end standard cameras are expensive but offering excellent picture quality. These cameras are only limited by their unchangeable lens and sensor size when they are not full-frame.

Zoom compact camera

Like the standard camera with the only difference in their zoom capability, it can go to 30 x optical zoom or even more.

Adventure compact camera

Almost the same as the standard camera, plus they are waterproof, shockproof, and even freeze-proof. A sturdy build makes them very good for use in extreme conditions. On the other side, the limited zoom and exposure options and a small sensor lead to poor photo quality.

Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR)

These are high-end digital cameras divided into two main categories – hobby and pro. The hobby models have an entry-level APS-C sensor, and the professional ones come with a full-frame sensor. You can detach the lens and replace it with the needed one.

This is a considerable advantage, being able to use the right lens for the right task. These cameras are usually used by professionals or hobbyists who know what they are doing. Having a DSLR  does not mean that your pictures will be great. You need knowledge and a lot of training to archive the best results.

Mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC)

Great digital cameras, are similar to the DSLR ones, with some differences:

  • Size and weight – which is very important when traveling, handling for a long time
  • Mirrorless – As the term says, they don’t use a mirror system. The camera does not have an optical mirror or viewfinder but an electronic one that displays the camera sensor. The lack of a moving mirror reduces vibration, which may result in blurred pictures.
  • In the newest models, they don’t use a mechanical shutter anymore. They are using an electronic one which is quieter.
  • Lens are usually not compatible between DSLR and MILC, but they have dedicated ones. Anyway, there are adapters if you like some specific lens, so you’ll still be able to use them.

Mirrorless cameras are my favorite ones. They suit my needs being a traveler with outstanding picture quality and better maneuverability than DSLR. Please do not take it as advice, this is only a personal opinion, and it is only according to my needs.

Keep in mind…

Buying a professional camera will not necessarily lead to taking great astonishing shoots. If you have knowledge about photography and you’re looking to get better results, then that’s fine. If you don’t, but you are studying photography, again, it is okay. But if you don’t and are not involved in photography, buy a camera model that suits your needs.

A compact camera or smartphone will do the job for most people looking to have lovely photos from holidays, celebrations, or only outdoor/indoor images.
