This camera is intended to target cost-conscious users with a tight budget and want to buy an entry-level DSLR for photography beginners and don’t want to spend their bundle of bucks on a professional class camera.

This camera has an all-new 24.1 megapixels camera sensor. It offers continuous shooting up to 3 frames per second, ease of use, sound battery life, 9 point autofocus system, 3 inches fixed rear LCD, easy sharing, and certain other things.

Design / outlook / built quality

The successor to this entry-level DSLR is Canon T6. There isn’t any major change in T7 compared to T6 except the brand new 24.1 megapixels sensor. This sensor is faster, increasing the buffer depth, and pretty much more responsive than the 18 megapixels outdated previous sensor of T6.

Upgrading the sensor added the additional six million pixels and boosted a detailed rendition of the images and videos.

Keeping aside the upgraded sensor, it isn’t easy to find any difference; the same ISO range, same FPS, same design, same DIGIC 4+ image processor. The dimension of T7’s body is (W x H x D): 5.1 x 4 x 3.1″ / 129 x 101.3 x 77.6 mm and it weighs around 1.1pounds without a lens.

Being lightweight and small makes it easy to handle. Plastic is used in the body with texture coating on the front grip and rear thumb, giving an overall plastic look.

Button and ports placement is identical to the T6. The rear buttons are configured in a way, which makes it very easy to navigate and understand. These controls are on the right side of the LCD. These buttons include; live view button, EV compensation, Q button, Display + Menu, and play buttons.

On the front plate of the body, there is a lens release button. There is the mode dial, power switch, flash release, control dial, and shutter release on the top plate.

Screen

The display of the camera is a fixed 3 inches LCD screen. It is on the back of the camera, and all the settings are shown on it. This display lacks touch control, and the only option to control the camera is via its buttons.

There is an on-screen shooting guide for beginners, which can assist them further in operating the camera.

Image quality

T7 can capture images in both RAW and JPEG format. RAW is 14 bits and always captured in maximum resolution, whereas for JPEG resolution of 6000 x 4000 is delivered via a 3:2 aspect ratio.

These images can be turned in to more artistic form via 7 + 8 modes for picture styles and white balance, respectively.

Video

Just like the predecessor, T7 is also not capable of capturing 4k video. No 4k, but you can capture high definition video of 1920 x 1080 resolution for the available frame rates of 24, 25, and 30fps.

For the 1080p, the device encodes at a bit rate of around 340MB per minute in 24p and 30p. For 30fps or 1080p, you can not use the option of slo-mo recording.

ISO Range

ISO range offered by T7 is the same as T6. For the main camera modes, i.e., P, Tv, Av, M, this range is 100-6400.

For exposure modes, i.e., Creative-auto, Landscape, Close-up, sports, food, night, intelligent scene auto, and flag features, this range is limited to 100-3200.

Battery life

Battery life is one of the overwhelming features of this camera, keeping in mind its price.

The battery is an 860mAh Lithium-ion battery. Its life depends on the format you are shooting in, but it is still impressive. In-camera charging of this battery is not supported.

Autofocus

There is no update in the Autofocus system. T7 uses the same 9 points AF system. It is pretty disappointing. Rival cameras are providing better autofocus quality as compared to this out-dated one.

Canon could’ve at least add their signature Dual CMOS AF system. THE old AF system is causing lagging issues and slow performance of the device for various users and other headaches. For example, with all the AF points clustered in the center of the frame, your subject can go off-center, and you have to frame them again and again.

The coverage of the camera is focused on the center of the frame.

Metering

For the Metering, there is a 63 zone dual-layer metering sensor. This sensor gives four options for metering:

• Evaluative
• Partial
• Centre-weighted
• Spot metering

From all the above-mentioned options, the evaluative showed the best results.

White balance system

Just like T6, the white balance system of T7 also performs pretty well. These options have further sub-options, and one of the new addition in those options is Ambiance Priority Auto White Balance Mode.

It was engineered to prevent the shot from losing it’s warmer look when the user is attempting to get the neutral results.

Audio performance

The audio performance of this camera will meet your expectations. Despite upgrading the sensor with a heavier one, Canon did not sacrifice the noise control. Noise reduction performance is for JPEG and RAW format both.

For JPEG files, there’s automatic softening of details and reduction of background noises. For RAW files, audio details are fined, but you can still find some granular noise and Chroma noise.

But these noises are not very dominant, so this problem is not very considerable.

Some other features:

• The camera supports NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity for video and image sharing. Via the Canon app, you can view images quickly on your iOS and Android smartphones. There is no Bluetooth sharing option.
• For the storage of videos and images, an additional storage card is required. T7 supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards.
• The camera ports include a USB 2.0 port, a Type-C Mini HDMI port, and a jack for an RS-60E3 remote. This remote is wired.
• The viewfinder is old-school and offers approximately 95% vertical and horizontal coverage with an eyepoint of 21mm. The magnification is0.8x approx. (0.5x in 35mm) with an angle of view of 22.4 degrees and comes up with an adjustable Diopter.
• In general, we did not find this camera as a very effective and efficient performer. The update of the processor did increase its performance, yet it is somehow sluggish. But it makes sense because of its low price.

It is pretty much simple and easy to operate. It offers a good image quality with 24 megapixels and 9 point focus system, has better than expected battery timing, and logically laid out controls.

If you are already a user of an action camera or professional photographer/videographer, we don’t recommend this camera. It is an entry-level DSLR and a good choice for beginners.

There are some pretty nice updates and features in this camera, but you can not expect it to function like a pro, keeping in mind the price you are getting this camera.
