In a world where everyone is behind mirrorless cameras, the Canon EOS 90D is a type of camera that can make the DSLRs relevant again. Anyone can count on this camera from casual photography to professional photography, i.e., wedding shoots.

As compared to its predecessor, there are numerous new technologies and features added to this camera, making it one of the best DSLR from Canon. With all the qualities which can define any DSLR as ‘the best,’ Canon EOS 90D also has some specifications identical to mirrorless cameras.

Keeping it simple, this camera is the perfect blend of reasonable price, great features, and good built.

Canon EOS 90D Review

One common perception of DSLR cameras is that they are relatively heavier than mirrorless cameras. Well, Canon EOS 90D is here to make this perception wrong. Including battery and SD card weight, it is only 700 grams.

A decrease in weight as compared to the predecessor, but this model from the EOS series is also smaller. The camera’s physical dimensions are 140.7mm x 104.8mm x 76.8mm (W x H x D) only.

The best thing about its design is the ergonomics it offers. It fits in hand, easy to use, and easy to carry around. Not only ergonomics, but there is also the option of customization open for users to some extent.

The aluminum alloy, polycarbonate resin, and glass fiber body makes it’s ultra-durable and gives it strength. The camera is not entirely water-proof and dust-proof, but it can still avoid these two damages to some extent by being water and dust resistant.

Easy controls

There are multiple easy controls with good grips making the experience with Canon EOS 90D very pleasant. The buttons and rear-command dial are the same as 80D, but the camera’s grip is redesigned by making it deeper and thinner.

The placement of the viewfinder and LCD screen is also identical to the predecessor. Viewfinder performance is excellent. It can provide 100% frame coverage – one of the reasons that make possible 4k video without any cropping.

The LCD is 3 inches and offers a very responsive touch and excellent screen resolution. (All figures mentioned in the detailed section of specifications)

About buttons, a control button sits on the lens mount side. The lens release button is on the left side of the support. The mode dial, on/off switch, on the left. Shooting controls and flash on the right, just like predecessor 80D.

Several buttons are with monochrome information display, i.e., autofocus, metering, Drive, and ISO buttons. M-Fn button and shutter release are on the backside beside the main control wheel.

CMOS (APS-C) Sensor

Canon EOS 90D features a super-effective 32.5 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor to deliver ultra-high resolution images and videos. The native ISO range because of this sensor is 100 to 25,600, which can go up to a maximum sensitivity of 51,200.

It also makes a possible narrow field of view, boosting the maximum limiting of the camera zoom. APS-C sensor helps to capture good images in low light, reduce noise at higher ISO, refine details of the image, and enable fast autofocus and continuous shooting.

The sensor is placed in a light-capturing design, making it more capable of delivering the best performance.

The APS-C sensor is a new addition in the E0S series debuting from Canon EOS 90D, doubling its feature compared to the predecessors.

Autofocusing

The 90 comes with a modern all cross-type sensor as it has a 45 point AF autofocusing system. Cross-type sensors make object detection more accurate than single line sensors. Detection accuracy is not affected at wider apertures, i.e., from 27 points on shooting at f8 aperture, 9 points are cross-type.

Autofocus offered by 90D for live view and viewfinder is the best one as compared to the competitors. For viewfinder shooting, photographers can better the focus more by using the ‘Spot AF’ focus area, another new addition in this series coming directly from top-notch Canon’s DSLR.

DIGIC 8 Image Processing System

DICIC 8 image processor introduced by canon in 2018 can process 4k videos with up to 30 fps using MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression. It also decreases the background noise in images, ensures the quality of photos and videos sharp, keeps grain minimal, makes operation fast, and helps capture low light images better.

Capturing at higher ISO with 90D, the DIGIC 8 processor also makes sure to keep the photos fair.

Image performance

The image result of 90D is impressive. Several lab tests show that it can capture high-resolution images all across its ISO range, big thanks to DIGIC 8 and APS-C sensor. For pictures, there are several white balance settings such as Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, White Fluorescent, Flash, Custom, and Kelvin.

There is also an all-new metering system, which can be controlled manually or through metering settings available in the menu. For a better experience, face-detection and delay features are also added in Canon EOS 90D. The image quality of 90D is visibly better than 80D, but they are almost identical in noise-levels.

Video

The video quality gives it an edge over all its competitor’s DSLR cameras. One drawback of DSLRs compared to mirrorless cameras is that UHD videos are cropped from sides (4k crop). Well, 90D can capture a full-frame Ultra high definition 4k videos at 30p (in PAL region to 25p).

With 4k, 1080/120p, and all below video modes are also available. You can also enjoy full HD video at 1120p/100p. It can output an uncompressed signal over HDMI in 8-bit 4:2:2 color.

Live view:

To eliminate micro autofocus adjustments, live view is featured in-camera with ultra-low-light EV -5 AF (EV -2.5 in 4k video recording and EV -3 in Full HD). It enables the 90D to use contrast detection to focus on the subject with the help of readings from the sensor.

Continuous shooting:

Continuous shooting or burst shooting is usually found in high-end cameras, but the good news, you can capture up to a frame per second in this camera. For those who don’t know, in continuous shooting mode, the camera continues to shoot photos as long as you keep pressing the shutter button.

Connectivity

Using the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the camera connection can easily be connected with smartphones, tablets, and desktops.

Battery life

The battery life of Canon EOS 90D is improved than its predecessor. In EVP mode, as per CIPA ratings, it is up to 1300 shots. Otherwise, it is around 450 shots upon full charging.
